M OT I O N P I CTU R E S O U N D E D I TO R S 27 doesn't need to be summoned from a plugin list or licensed from a third party, it simply exists, waiting. And in countless moments when speed matters more than elegance, EQ3 proves its worth. Its interface is unadorned but therein lies its strength. With seven bands available, each parametric, it can shape or restrain with minimal effort. Bandwidth can be set, a frequency nudged, or a cut applied. Nothing more is required in those moments when someone leans over and asks, "Can you make that clearer?" The EQ3 is the bone we instinctively reach for. Yet bones evolve into spacecraft. Across the same timeline, FabFilter's Pro-Q4 represents a different vision: sleek, expansive, and precise. Where EQ3 offers a straightforward bandwidth adjustment, Pro-Q4 presents a spectrum that can be grabbed, sculpted, and refined in real time. The immediacy of EQ3 contrasts with the visual feedback and surgical accuracy of Pro-Q4. Both are tools, but the path they take is strikingly different. Consider bandwidth. On EQ3, it is a functional parameter: widen to affect broadly, narrow to address specifics. On Pro-Q4, bandwidth is interactive, shaped in context with dynamic EQ possibilities that respond to changing program material. One tool solves the problem with a firm gesture, the other adapts to its fluctuations with finesse, and vastly expands possibilities. Neither approach is inherently superior. There are moments when simplicity is enough, even preferable, and others when only the spacecraft's controls will get us through turbulence. The craft lies in knowing when the bone is all we need, and when the spacecraft is worth boarding. The Spacecraft in Detail If EQ3 is the bone we instinctively grasp, Pro-Q4 is the spacecraft, designed not only to reach the same destination, but to do so with expanded control panels, real-time displays, and precision navigation. It embodies the evolution of equalization into a tool that can both reassure and impress. The visual spectrum is its most immediate signature. Where EQ3 relies on trained ears and minimal feedback, Pro-Q4 turns frequency into a landscape: peaks rise, valleys dip, and problems almost reveal themselves on the screen. A resonance that would take some time of critical listening to identify with EQ3 appears visually as a sharp ridge, inviting a quick grab and cut. Spectrum Grab itself extends this metaphor: the ability to reach into the display, select what our ears already suspect, and let the plugin perform the surgery. Dynamic EQ is another frontier. While EQ3 applies fixed cuts or boosts, Pro-Q4 can adapt its adjustments to the signal's behavior. A harsh note or sibilant tone doesn't need to be suppressed constantly; it can be touched only when it flares. This transforms bandwidth from a static parameter into a "living," responsive element. Even phase is a choice in the spacecraft. Pro-Q4 offers Natural, Linear, and Zero Latency modes, giving mixers the ability to balance transparency with practicality. EQ3, by design, stays simple and efficient, without such options, a reminder that sometimes fixed architecture is an advantage when speed outweighs nuance. And then there is scale. With EQ3, seven bands mark the boundary of its architecture, "I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that." With Pro-Q4, dozens of bands can be introduced without fear of overloading the system, each freely placed and modifiable in slope and shape. The difference is not merely quantity but philosophy: EQ3 sets limits that encourage decisive moves, while Pro-Q4 opens possibilities that encourage exploration, and within that exploration, the expansion of our knowledge. Beyond its visual and interactive surface, Pro-Q4 extends into dimensions that EQ3 does not touch. Dynamic EQ allows any band to respond to the EQ3 Main Interface ProQ4 Interface
