evolving vision. Lead Set Designer Sorin Popescu modelled approximately ten hero versions of the laboratory space, some with mezzanines, multiple staircases, boiler room spaces and so on. In the end, it was a simpler version of the lab in which we angled the upper walls and kept the focus on the large sculpted Medusa head, antiquity's misunderstood monster that spoke to Guillermo's sensibilities. The enormous rosette window that we settled on, after many versions, was a deliberate nod, a Guillermo Easter egg as it were, to a window that had been seen on Crimson Peak, beautifully designed by the late Thomas Saunders. Much of the monumental space was characterized by texture and light. The giant vortex chute extending from the top of the tower to the base brought in rain, lightning, wind and the odd pigeon. A single spiral staircase that we custom-built took Frankenstein to the top of the tower, wherein he could capture the lightning strike needed to "make alive" the creature. From a vine-covered and pigeon-filled abandoned space to the active laboratory, and then to the exploded skeletal remains of the building, the lab ROUND WINDOW AS STONE FINISH SEE DWG 03-06 STAGE 3 AIR DUCTS CEILING VORTEX 1/4" MASO AS CERAMIC TILE ALTERNATING ROWS OF 3"x6" AND 3"x8" DOUBLE DOORS DETAIL TO FOLLOW SPIRAL STAIRS OPENING METAL GRATE AS CAST IRON FINISH DETAIL TO FOLLOW VAULTED WALL AS STONE FINISH MURAL MEDUSA 3D PRINT AS STONE FINISH TILE FINISH 3"x6" SUBWAY CERAMIC TILE FLOOR AS STONE FINISH SEE DWG 01-03 COLUMNS AS CAST IRON FINISH AS STONE BASE SEE DWAG 03-09 4ft RISER PILASTER AS CAST IRON FINISH SEE DWG 03-03 STAGE 3 WALL STAGE 3 TRUSS FLOOR OPENING 1/4" MASO AS CERAMIC TILE ALTERNATING ROWS OF 3"x6" AND 3"x8" TBD WINDOWS PAINTED WOOD FINISH SEE DWG 03-01 STAGE 3 FLOOR TBD WINDOWS SILL AS STONE FINISH SEE DWG 03-01 CEILING RING AS CAST IRON FINISH SEE DWG 05-05 40'-4" 15'-6" 4'-0" 23'-10" 19'-0" 36'-8" 6" 7" 100'-0" 22'-10" 5'-4" 8" 3'-0" 1'-6" 12'-10" 1'-0" 4'-0" 6'-7" 1'-0" 26'-0" 26'-0" 2'-0" 12'-10" 1'-4" 26'-0" 15'-4" 1'-0" 3'-0" 36'-10" 8 1 2 " 2'-2" 2'-0" 1'-10" 4'-0" 10'-0" 8'-6" 1'-2" 2'-9 3 8 " 8" R4'-2" 3'-5" 2'-2" 28'-10" 2'-0" 6'-0" R3'-5 1 2 " 3'-0" 11'-6" 3'-0" 1'-0" 18'-0" 3'-7" 1'-4" 1'-5 1 2 " R8'-8 5 8 " 6" 26'-0" 1'-4 1 2 " 2'-10" 3'-6" 7'-8" 29'-0" R4'-8" 1'-0" 14'-5" 3'-7" 8'-6" 5'-2" 19'-0" 5'-4" 2'-0" 62'-0" 19'-0" 19'-0" 8" 1'-0" 10'-10" 19'-6" 17'-5 1 4 " 1'-2" 23'-10" 6'-0" Scale 1/4" = 1'-0" Int. Lab ISSUED REVISED tower was an ever-changing series of set pieces that evoked a historic realism in a fantastical world of texture, falling water and constantly changing light. Building the Creature's World: The Mill and Naturescapes Whereas Victor Frankenstein had upward of twenty different sets and many personal environments, the Creature really never had a place to call home. The closest set that was "his" was the millhouse, based on a variety of medieval and 1700s farmhouse architecture. For this, we built a full interior studio set that included a mill room of large working wooden mill gears and the farmer's open living quarters, as well as a separate full exterior build on location outside of Toronto that included a fenced sheep pen, a custom gate, a shed and a water wheel. At one point, the exterior build was almost complete, and Guillermo wanted to add a roof gable sculpture, typical of some historical Eastern European village buildings, a "green man" forest spirit sculpted in wood.
