It's been so rewarding to collaborate with her as each film has been within completely different genres—modern horror with Candyman and sci-fi/ fantasy with The Marvels. With Hedda, Nia scripted her own interpretation of the famous Henrik Ibsen play Hedda Gabler, transporting the setting to 1950s England. When we first started to talk about it, she was explicit in that she didn't want to create a straightforward period film. She wanted Hedda to feel lavish, modern, bold and timeless. Nia is always looking to create visual, stylized films and her collaborators are all invited to bring a lot of ideas to the table, which makes working with her so fun! In Nia's script, Hedda Gabler has just returned from her honeymoon and moved into a sprawling country estate that she and her new husband can't really afford. She is glamorous and vivacious, but also deeply unhappy, which leads to her acting out in outrageously cruel ways.
