The apartment paired well with our butcher alley location at Bakehouse Close off the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, which we shot many months later at the tail end of our roughly 120-day shoot. Another large set we built was Leopold's (Victor's father's) bedroom, where the climactic action scene of the Creature arriving at the family home just before the wedding of Elizabeth and Victor's brother, William. For this design, I worked tirelessly to unite the four separate locations we had chosen for Victor's family villa: Gosford House outside of Edinburgh, Wilton House near Salisbury, Burghley House near Stamford and the never- before-filmed Dunecht House in Aberdeen, Scotland. Components of each grand estate were brought into the set: wall and ceiling murals, pink granite, oak doors with gold gilt embellishments and marble floors. Our filming ended in Scotland and areas outside of London last fall, at the locations we had carefully chosen over a year and a half earlier. It was those locations: the tones of the Edinburgh cobblestones, the misty Scottish skies, the towers and the musty, grand corridors of so many phenomenal castles and villas, the seas and the forests, that inspired and formed our world. It was from those places where Mary Shelley had lived and written Frankenstein that we drew our color palettes, our rich textures and our cinematic ambience. ADG E. VICTOR'S APARTMENT.
