wall section "wilded" on a rolling framework to accommodate the camera cranes and equipment. Initially a dark wood, we moved to a more traditional white, heavily tech-ed down, for the interior with accents of gold and royal navy blue, carved embellishments and carefully sculpted icicles and ice patterns on glass. The move to a white interior was, perhaps, a nod to Mutiny on the Bounty, both the 1935 and the 1962 versions, as Guillermo loves to honour classic cinema. And although challenging for our director of photography to light the white set, this lighter interior felt right: cold, sad and historically accurate. Shane Vieau's set decoration included a beautifully carved captain's desk, a pot-belly coal stove and a multitude of historically accurate ship captain's artifacts. Building the Tower Laboratory The design for the environment of Frankenstein's lab first began while scouting in the U.K. with a small group: Guillermo, our producer, Miles Dale, Guy Davis (Guillermo's long-standing concept illustrator) and myself. From the start, Guillermo was exploring the concept that the lab would be reconstructed from an abandoned water plant at the cliffside of a lake or ocean. But it was seeing some of the towers and historic architecture in the U.K. that particularly inspired us: the form and height of Scotland's famous Wallace Tower was a strong influence, the stone walls of Sterling Castle, the marble floors of Hamilton mausoleum and Hatfield House, the windows and spiral stairs of the Crossness pumping station, the immense carved scrolls flanking the entry of St. Stephens Church in Edinburgh. The full tower consisted of seven separate full sets of various sizes: the exterior tower base built D.
