ILLUSTRATION DRAWN IN PROCREATE AND PHOTOSHOP BY RJ RAGAMPUDI. On August 6, the AFI soundstage was transformed into a gallery of design work created by the 2025 graduating class. The AFI Production Design Spotlight is a yearly event where alumni, faculty and members of the professional community gather to celebrate the achievements of the cohort as they take their first steps in to the profession. The 13 graduating fellows presented work done over the course of the rigorous two-year program. Examples ranged from realized projects, both short cycle films and a fully produced thesis productions, to theoretical designs that allowed the students to imagine at a far more ambitious scale. All the many skills employed in contemporary Art Departments were on display, from hand drafting and analog sketching skills to examples of work done in the many digital programs currently in use, such as Procreate, SketchUp, Photoshop, Vectorworks, Rhino and Twinmotion. Physical white models, drafted construction details, 3D-printed props and production stills and video reels of the many realized designs done over their two years of study were on display to the packed house.
