The fi lm follows various people involved in the country and gospel music industry in Nashville, Tennessee, over a fi ve- day period leading up to a gala concert for a populist outsider running for President. Shot on location in Nashville in 1974, the fi lm is often noted for its scope and features a large ensemble cast with 24 main characters, an hour's worth of musical numbers, and multiple storylines. In an 2005 interview for DGA Quarterly, Altman, who passed away in 2006, said of the fi lm, "I've been eclectic in my taste and the kinds of things that I do. I've made more musicals than the Arthur Freed unit at MGM. People don't think of me that way. Nashville was a musical. Each one of the songs told you something about character." Upon its release, Nashville was a box-offi ce success and received signifi cant attention from critics. In addition to Altman's DGA Award nomination, Nashville earned Academy Award nominations for Best Director, Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Ronee Blakley and Lily Tomlin) and Best Picture. It took home the Best Music, Original Song Oscar for Keith Carradine's rendition of "I'm Easy." In 1992, the Library of Congress selected the fi lm for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically or aesthetically signifi cant." 1 0 0 I D G A M O N T H L Y ยป Robert Altman on the set of Nashville.
