UPM Celia Costas discusses her experiences as a Location Manager and Unit Production Manager, her work with Directors Alan Pakula and Mike Nichols, and her tried and true methods of preparation and budgeting. Costas on her budgeting philosophy: "I learned so much about budgets from being a Production Manager. I really began to understand that if you shave a little here and there, by the end or halfway through the movie, guess what, you got this little pile of cash. It's all a manipulation. As I've said before, I think the budgets should service the movie and, because this is a kind of a dictatorship, it should service the Director's vision. I don't hesitate to reach out and, you know, explain the reasons why we might need x, y, or z, and, you know, the way we did with [Mike Nichols'] Angels In America in Rome at the end. The Actors' contracts ended in December and we went in January. So, what we ended up doing is not offering them any additional salary, but offering them plane tickets and hotel rooms so that they can bring their families or friends or whatever to Rome with them and have a good time. And that worked. That worked really well." The DGA's Visual History Program website contains hundreds of hours of videotaped interviews with Directors and Director's team members discussing their careers and reflections on all aspects of the creative process in film, television and other media. These interviews are indexed for quick retrieval of segments pertaining to specific topics of interest within a particular interview or across the entire collection.
