LOCAL706.ORG • 45 PHOTOS COURTESY OF UNIVERSAL STUDIOS BEHIND THE MADNESS OF HIM The feature film Him, produced by Monkeypaw Productions, offered the hair department a creative playground—an opportunity to blend grounded realism with heightened, stylized storytelling. Known for its genre- bending approach to horror and social commentary, Monkeypaw pushes visual language beyond the ordinary. Every hair style in Him was designed not just for beauty but to deepen the psychological layers of each character. From sharp barbering to distressed wigs, each look became a visual cue defining class, trauma, and identity. Defining Masculinity Through Precision At the heart of Him is Marlon Wayans, whose character required a look rooted in discipline and control. His hair style was sculpted with precise barbering with clean lines, intentional fades, and symmetry that reflected confidence and composure. Each detail communicated the image of a man who hides emotion behind perfection. Tyriq Withers, playing a younger counterpart, mirrored that sharpness with a haunting twist. His look began as equally meticulous but evolved into something far more unsettling. To reinforce his internal struggle, we incorporated a special effects prosthetic scar running across his scalp, held together with metallic staples. The juxtaposition of flawless grooming and visceral imperfection symbolized the war between image and pain—the polished exterior and the scars beneath. Southern Glamour Meets Modern Edge Tyriq's on-screen girlfriend Jasmine, an influencer from Texas, brought another dimension to the visual storytelling. Her hair embodied volume, allure, and unapologetic confidence—an instant nod to Southern glamour with a contemporary twist. We created L to R: Tyriq Withers as Cam and Julia Fox as Elsie. Right: Marlon Wayans as Isaiah. B Y B R I A N B A D I E D E P A R T M E N T H E A D H A I R
