Director Drew Esocoff discusses his career in sports directing, his experiences directing Sunday Night Football, Super Bowls and the Olympics, and what it means to serve the sports fan. Esocoff on serving the sports fan: "If the announcers are talking about Jim Boeheim and I'm on a shot at John Thompson, that's probably not what they wanna be seeing. If there's a critical measurement in a football game coming up, and it's gonna be Gene Steratore, the referee, putting the index card between the point of the football and the end of the chains, you probably don't wanna be on a shot of the quarterback. It sounds not complicated and easy, but when you're enticed by 30 cameras selling you shots, there's an instinct, 'Boy, there's a lot of good stuff on that monitor wall, but no, wait a second, what the viewer wants to see is the shot here.' If there's a toe tap along the sideline for a critical fi rst down it's not the most exciting shot, but the right shot is to see the referee come into frame and either go like this or like this. And there's quarterback shots, there's coach reaction shots, all that stuff is there for you, but what the viewer wants to see was the guy inbounds or out of bounds, period." The DGA's Visual History Program website contains hundreds of hours of videotaped interviews with Directors and Director's team members discussing their careers and refl ections on all aspects of the creative process in fi lm, television and other media. These interviews are indexed for quick retrieval of segments pertaining to specifi c topics of interest within a particular interview or across the entire collection.
