In 2009 the Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry. In the process, Stiller turns the camera on himself and his family to examine Jerry and Anne's enormous influence on their lives, and the generational lessons we all can learn from those we love. I Was Born This Way Directed by Daniel Junge & Sam Pollard — Presented by the Special Projects Committee Documentary Series Surviving the oppression of racism and homophobia, Carl Bean found his voice through song as a gospel singer in the New York Gospel scene. His 1974 album, Universal Love, was just the start of his mission to create positive change in the world. Bean's 1977 cover of the disco hit "I Was Born This Way" became a song celebrated as the world's first gay anthem, but Bean rejected a mainstream music career, instead choosing a life in activism. He started the Minority AIDS Project, which served a vital role for underserved populations during the AIDS crisis, and he founded Unity Fellowship Church, the first LGBTQ+ church for people of color. Daniel Junge (Being Evel) and Sam Pollard's (Two Trains Runnin') I Was Born This Way explores the life and legacy of Bean and his resounding message: "Love is for everyone."
