We've all heard that before — and many of us have said it, too. But recently, I've been thinking more about the source of that power and how it can be put to better use for our common good. In every zip code, working people are the supermajority. We open the schools, stock the shelves, care for the sick, and pay taxes to keep our communities running. We're the ones who make things move — and when we move together, there's nothing we can't accomplish. We saw that in 2018, when more than 75,000 #RedForEd supporters ooded the State Capitol to stand up for our dignity at work. ose crowds were packed with educators, students, parents, and union siblings from every trade: electricians, meatpackers, construction workers, and countless others who saw our struggle as their own. Solidarity between working people is the antidote to fascism, and our adversaries know that. at's why they work so hard to divide us — creating resentment and division based on race, education, job title, immigration status, or other factors. Too o en, it works — and while we are distracted and divided, they pass laws that enrich themselves at our expense. But there's a roadmap to ghting back — and it starts with remembering that we are on the same side. It's our families who feel the impact when schools are underfunded, when hospitals close, and when wages stagnate. But it's also our families who stand to gain the most when we organize and demand better. As we move deeper into the school year, I urge you to think about your role in building collective power — not just within your school, but across job classi cations, districts, and communities. Solidarity begins at our worksites, but it must extend far beyond them.
