32 PROP CULTURE I FALL 2025 INCEPTION In Inception, the spinning top is a totem used by Dom Cobb to distinguish dreams from reality. If it falls, he is awake. If it keeps spinning, he is still dreaming. The top belonged to his late wife, Mal, whose presence lingers throughout the film. She acts as both memory and threat, challenging Cobb's grasp on reality. He relies on the top to ground himself as he navigates unstable perceptions. In the final scene, Cobb returns home and sees his children. The top spins, begins to wobble, but the screen cuts to black before it falls. The moment leaves viewers suspended between illusion and truth. The top remains one of modern cinema's most iconic symbols. Fun fact: The "wobbling top" was a happy accident. Property Master Scott Maginnis oversaw the creation of all totems, including Mal's. Multiple tops were made to spin flawlessly. The day before filming the final scene, Assistant Property Master Erick Garibay tested them. One fell on concrete, creating a subtle imperfection. The damage caused the top to spin slightly off-center. The next morning, Christopher Nolan asked if the top could spin imperfectly. Serendipitously, the result became the signature "wobbling top," the ambiguous image that ends the film and secures its legacy. Property Master: Scott Maginnis SCENE STEALERS
