LMGI COMPASS | Summer 2025 • 31 LM Benjamin Hendriks/LMGI: "I've been to Spain many times but had never been to Basque Country. I was amazed by the variety of different locations the region had to offer. The natural Malaespera mine, the industrial port and the historic old town of Bilboa to name a few which all have yet to be further discovered by film crews. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe ( Game of Thrones) remains an amazing place to see. The Atxarte Quarry made the biggest impression on me. Besides the beautiful locations, the region is extremely film-friendly, as was clearly evident during our meeting with the provincial council of Bizkaia and the mayor of Bilboa, who personally welcomed us and emphasized opening their doors to film crews." Benjamin Hendriks/LMGI SLM Markus Bensch/LMGI: "Over the last few decades, Bilbao has transformed from a city mainly dependent on heavy industry to a vibrant cultural hub. Seeing Gehry's iconic Guggenheim Museum has been on my bucket list forever and it did not disappoint. The region of Bizkaia has so much to offer: a huge underground iron-ore mine, a closed quarry with dozens of vultures circling above, picturesque medieval seaside towns, and of course, wherever you go … our friends from Game of Thrones have already been there! Did I mention the food and the hospitality of the people? Off the charts! A five out of five stars!"
