48 • LMGI COMPASS | Summer 2025 OUTSTANDING LOCATIONS IN A PERIOD FILM The Apprentice Fly Me to the Moon THE APPRENTICE In a gritty, low-budget indie filmed entirely in Toronto, Donald Trump's early years under the mentorship of Roy Cohn unfold across 50 locations in just 30 days to double as 1970s–1990s New York City. Toronto's streets, dressed with vintage cars and costumed extras, capture the era's milieu as the city evolves alongside its main character. The Fairmont Royal York Hotel stands in for the Commodore, a moodily lit confrontation at a bar unfolds in Piano Piano's basement, and a lavish mansion becomes Donald and Ivana's penthouse, complete with faux elevator doors. Iconic moments from legal battles at New York City Hall take place in a church chapel, Aspen getaways film at the charming Scandinavian-style Old Mill Hotel and a Mar-a-Lago garden plays in the Centennial Park Conservatory. The grand opening of Trump Tower is cleverly pulled off using visual effects and a stand-in at the imposing steel-and-glass WaterPark Place complex. A COMPLETE UNKNOWN Bob Dylan's storied early career, from his arrival in 1960s New York to his rise as a cultural icon through the Civil Rights Movement and his controversial shift to electric music is chronicled in this biopic, with most period New York locations artfully reimagined in New Jersey. Cape May stands in for Newport, Rhode Island, its preserved waterfront charm serves as the site of the imposing Colonial Revival-style Hotel Viking. Jersey Avenue in Jersey City doubles as MacDougal Street, a believable cheat for 1960s Greenwich Village. The Chelsea Hotel in New York, one of the true authentic locations used, plays a major role as a haven for struggling artists. The meticulous world building transports us back in time to experience the life, music and explosive era of one of the most influential and enigmatic artists of our time. FLY ME TO THE MOON This sharp, stylish romantic comedy is set against the high- stakes backdrop of NASA's historic 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing. Sparks fly when a marketing maven, brought in to fix NASA's public image, wreaks havoc on a launch director's already difficult task. Incredible access to the Kennedy Space Center hallway where astronauts walk before a launch, its Vehicle Assembly Plant, launch pads and massive Crawler ground the fanciful story firmly in reality. Locations in Georgia round out the world, with Savannah playing for the base's surrounding community and Tybee Island standing in for Florida's fabled Cocoa Beach. A Complete Unknown
