BY GARRETT MONTGOMERY MPSE M OT I O N P I CTU R E S O U N D E D I TO R S 41 A Conversation with G.A.N.G. Lifetime Achievement Recipient Scott Gershin F ew names carry as much weight in both film and game audio as Scott Gershin. With a career spanning more than four decades, he has shaped the sound of some of the most iconic titles across film and video games. From Mech Warrior, Gears of War, Final Fantasy, and Resident Evil to American Beauty, Pacific Rim, Shrek, and Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, his work blends emotional impact with technical mastery, seamlessly crossing genres and formats. A pioneer in digital audio, Scott was among the first to embrace computer- based technology in film sound, later helping to bring cinematic-quality audio into the world of games. Today, he serves as creative director at Sound Lab, a Keywords Studio, leading a team pushing the boundaries of narrative and emotional storytelling through sound in both interactive and linear media. With more than 200 film and game credits, he has garnered 11 MPSE Golden Reel Awards from 34 nominations and has received accolades from both the Emmys and BAFTA. Recently, he was honored with the Game Audio Network Guild's (G.A.N.G.) Lifetime Achievement Award for his exceptional contributions to game audio. I caught up with Scott to discuss his creative approach, how his tool kit has evolved, and his views on the future of interactive sound.
