2 PROP CULTURE I SUMMER 2025 LETTER FROM THE EDITORS I t is with great thanks and pride that we welcome you to issue three of Prop Culture. We hesitated at first, starting this with a callout to the issue number. At what point do we stop referencing which issue number it is? Certainly, by issue 47, we should no longer be announcing it. But like a parent with a new child, it takes a while until you stop announcing your baby's age in months. We cannot fully express our gratitude for the outpouring of support, encouragement, and praise we have received on behalf of Prop Culture. This could not have been more evident than in the amazing turnout for our launch event at Urban Press Winery in Burbank. There was such a great mix of PMG members, along with a good turnout of production designers, line producers, unit production managers and assorted friends and family. The kind words spoken from PMG President Jeffrey Johnson recalled how Prop Culture literally started over a Sunday-morning breakfast conversation. And here we are now welcoming you all to Prop Culture issue number three! It's a pleasure to extend a warm welcome to all our new subscribers! We're thrilled by the significant surge in subscriptions following our recent launch event. For those who missed either of our previous two issues, both are available digitally and feature some entertaining and insightful articles. Delve into "All the Props You Cannot See" by Property Master Pola Shreiber explore the creation of "Building the World of Saturday Night" with Property Master Mychael Bates and enjoy an exclusive conversation with the iconic Jeff Bridges. Plus, if you've ever debated, "What Exactly Is a Prop, Anyway?" PMG co-editor Theresa Corvino's article is essential reading. Our cover story this month features a conversation with Wicked Property Master Jamie Wilkinson by Randy Taylor. Jamie Wilkinson discusses the intricate process of creating the fantastical props for the film adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical. He details the extensive research and collaboration required to bring iconic items like Elphaba's broom and Glinda's wand to life, highlighting the challenges of making them both visually stunning and functional for the actors. Come along as Randy Taylor brings us on an insightful journey into the world of Oz! Property Master Kris Peck shares with you, as he refers to it, his addiction to collecting classic Hollywood movie posters. We are sure you will enjoy sharing in his passion as he presents a true scholarly and archival delve into some of cinema's most classic and iconic movie posters. We are really excited to bring you "Being the Property Master for Tyler Perry's The Six Triple Eight: An Incredible Journey Through History." In it, Property Master Elliott Boswell details his experience of authentically recreating the world of the only all-Black, all- woman WWII battalion, focusing on the daunting task of simulating 17 million pieces of mail through meticulous research and innovative prop creation. This piece provides a powerful illustration of the monumental task that falls to a Property Master. Our feature interview in this issue is with multitalented producer, writer and showrunner, LaToya Morgan. A self- professed film nerd and currently at the helm, along with J.J. Abrams on the new HBO period drama series, Duster, LaToya spent time with us discussing her love for classic Hollywood cinema, Saturday-morning cartoons, and a fan's quest for collecting iconic movie props. LaToya's appreciation for the work of the Property Master and her collaborative spirit is truly inspiring. We are extremely proud to present to you "Spotlight on Property Master Emily Ferry." In this interview, pioneering Emily Ferry reflects on her groundbreaking career, from battling gender discrimination to crafting iconic props for films like The Right Stuff and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and receiving the Property Masters Guild's first Lifetime Achievement Award. We are again pleased to bring to you all the advice you can hope for with, "Dear Theresa and Scott," "Ask the Experts," our "Prop Talk Podcast," "Scene Stealers," and so much more in this our THIRD ISSUE!
