Recent Visual History Addition The DGA's Visual History Program website contains hundreds of hours of videotaped interviews with Directors and Director's team members discussing their careers and refl ections on all aspects of the creative process in fi lm, television and other media. These interviews are indexed for quick retrieval of segments pertaining to specifi c topics of interest within a particular interview or across the entire collection. Director Miguel Arteta discusses his work in the independent fi lm world, lessons cultivated from his mentors, and his many collaborations in fi lm and television. Arteta on advice he took to heart from Director Samuel Fuller: "When I was at AFI. I got to meet another of my big idols, Samuel Fuller. I had three hours of speaking to Sam at his house that were incredibly invaluable in my education, especially with casting. He was like, 'Listen, regarding casting, cast the biggest movie star in the world or cast your neighbor, it doesn't fucking matter, just cast on hunch. Please don't use your brain. Please don't listen to what anyone says. Just cast from your stomach. Just cast on hunch.' It's been such a helpful thing throughout my whole career, because it's very true that casting is not a mental process and it's not a process what a lot of studio Executives and Producers would like you to think where you check the boxes: 'this Actor's the right age, the right ethnicity, the right things.' There's nothing about that. A Director needs to have a hunch that this Actor can fulfi ll the narrative thing that they need to fulfi ll in your story, and that's it. If you have the hunch that that Actor can do it, he's absolutely right. It doesn't matter whether they're famous, not famous, who they are, whether they're right, they're wrong. That's all that matters." Miguel Arteta interviewed by Michael Lehmann Follow Us On Social Media Stay connected with the Directors Guild of America!
