Games sure have changed since the fi rst Metal Gear
game was released in 1987, perhaps most dramatically
with the evolution of game cinematics and their impact
on narrative storytelling. Legendary game director
Hideo Kojima and his team set an incredibly high bar in
1998 with Metal Gear Solid, and they have continued to
be at the forefront of the medium ever since. One could
argue that they are the godfathers of modern game
cinematics as we know them.
Today, we take believable storytelling, cinematic
experiences, evocative music, top-tier voice acting, and
sound design in games for granted. None of this would
be possible without the innovations of Hideo Kojima
and his team, as they continued to up the ante with
each Metal Gear title over the past 38 years.
In 2014, one of those giant technological leaps was
with Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. The level of
visual and audio details in the game were staggering,
as well as the camera work and guiding hand of the
cinematics, leaving players wondering how on earth
they pulled it oˆ .
Today, we have the rare treat of learning about it
all from Ludwig Forssell, who in addition to being the
composer of this game, was also the longtime audio
director at Kojima Productions.
