M A I T L A N D C A S Tod Maitland CAS with his father, Dennis Maitland Sr. Tod with director James Mangold. I N T H E F I E L D O F production sound mixing, Tod A. Maitland's amazing work, especially in sound for music-based films, has set new standards and inspired countless peers and aspiring mixers. His work spans five decades, garnering six Academy Award nominations, seven CAS Award nominations, a BAFTA sound win, and an Emmy nomination. Tod has had the opportunity to record sound for many renowned directors, including Oliver Stone, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, and Spike Lee. His impressive portfolio spans classics like Tootsie to modern masterpieces such as West Side Story, JFK, Seabiscuit, I Am Legend, The Irishman, Joker, the TV series Fallout (for which he is nominated for a CAS Award and received an Emmy nomination), and the recently released, James Mangold-directed Bob Dylan film, A Complete Unknown (for which Tod earned his sixth Oscar nomination and seventh CAS Award nomination). Tod was born into a "Sound" family on Long Island, New York. His father, Dennis Maitland Sr., was the recipient of the CAS Career Achievement Award in 2009, while his siblings, Dennis Jr. and Kim, also have established sound careers in film and television. Presently, his nephew, Terence McCormack Maitland, has become part of the team. In a recent interview with his longtime boom operator Jerry Yuen, which was published in the Spring 2025 issue of CAS Quarterly, Tod shared a memory of his first time working on set. "The summer when I was around 16, my father asked me if I wanted to help out on a film he was mixing called An Unmarried Woman (1978), which was directed by Paul Mazursky. I went for two weeks helping the sound department out. I was an additional third, I guess you could say. My older brother, Dennis Jr., was the boom operator and this really was my first taste of the 'sound' world that my family was known for." Always at the cutting edge of technology, Tod has established himself as a pioneer in capturing sound for modern movie musicals. This journey began with The Doors (1991), directed by Oliver Stone, igniting a 30-year commitment to enhancing production sound for musicals—improving sound quality, efficiency, and technology. To date, he has worked on 15 music-based films. Beyond production sound, Tod collaborated with Wylie Stateman and Lon Bender to create The Hollywood Edge Sound Libraries. He also serves as Head of Sound at NYU Tisch Grad Film School. An esteemed speaker, Tod has delivered the commencement address at his alma mater and currently consults for Shure Microphones, among other ventures. Tod splits his time with his family between NYC and the Catskills, where his hobbies include spending time with friends, writing, building things, and inventing (Tod's wife, Sarah, calls him a "serial entrepreneur."). With more than 120 credits and growing, Tod is carrying on the family business quiet well. "Sixteen years ago, I had the honor to present my father with the CAS Career Achievement Award. To say that I am honored to receive this same prestigious award is an understatement. The film business has been a part of my life since I was in diapers, and now, to be recognized by my mentors and peers, there is no higher honor."
