4 S P R I N G 2 0 2 5 I C A S Q U A R T E R L Y A new year is often associated with being a time to reset, start fresh, or even motivate one to push further. Sadly for many of our members, colleagues, friends, and family in the Los Angeles area, 2025 started off with tragedy. As mentioned in President Peter Kurland's letter, the Cinema Audio Society is helping to support those affected by the fires with a strong financial donation. We encourage all of you who are able to help the victims of the L.A. fires and Hurricane Helene however you can. As we try to focus on some of the positive events, we are excited to celebrate this year's CAS Award nominees on February 22 and look forward to hearing from our 2025 Career Achievement Award recipient, Tod A. Maitland CAS. In this issue, Tod's longtime boom operator, Jerry Yuen, sits down with Tod—who just received an Oscar nomination (his sixth) for his work on James Mangold's A Complete Unknown—to discuss his upbringing, early gigs, growth as a mixer, and time in the CAS. We will also be honoring our Filmmaker Award recipient, director Denis Villeneuve, as well as our Student Recognition Award finalists. Good luck to all our members who are nominated for CAS, Golden Reel, and Grammy awards, as well as BAFTA's and Oscars! In addition to the engaging interview with Tod, we have our remaining coverage of The Sounding Board v4.0, courtesy of Kurt Kassulke CAS and CAS Associate members Shubhi Sahni and Karthik Mohan MPSE. Dan Kelly CAS shares his inventive use of conference room array mics to provide coverage for a hidden-camera show. Our production sound mixers seem to always come up with creative solutions to unique issues! In his article, Gregory Vilfranc CAS MPSE asks the question, "How Are You Holding Up?" His submission on mental and physical health (written before the fires began) seems very timely. Finally, for the first time since I've been a part of this magazine (going back to Fall 2007), this issue will not have a "Been There Done That" or "The Lighter Side" section. Given the challenges so many are going through, a pause seems like an appropriate approach. Thank you for taking the time to explore this issue.
