How do you properly cover an
actor when he is not miked, has
no blocking, and is unaware he is
an actor in the first place? I was
invited back to mix on the second
season of a hidden-camera show by
my dear friend, Blas Kisic CAS. Early
on, he had mentioned that this time
around was going to be much harder
to cover than the first season. I had
initially laughed at that notion, but
very quickly learned just what an

understatement it was. We worked
through scripts, trying to picture
the locations and the clever places
we could hide our favorite covert
microphones, knowing full well that
it was all a guessing game until it
actually unfolded in real time with
no reset or second take. Hiding mics
in clever spots is a fun and rewarding
challenge for a lot of us. But often
the best results come from things
hidden in plain sight.
