Best Practice: Re- Re- Re-Conforming b y C A S A s s o c i a t e K a r t h i k M o h a n M P S E This panel focused on avoiding changing too much and how to minimize issues in a multi-conform scenario. Supervising sound editor Bill Dean MPSE kicked the session off with a few quick tips and tricks. Bill spoke about the importance of conforming in grid mode to always help keep sync. Saving a copy of the current edit tracks one hour down the timeline is crucial for safe keeping and is often a starting point for re-conforming applications like Matchbox. Undo's and video tracks take up a great deal of RAM and, thereby, Bill suggests changing the number of undo's from the standard 64 to six or less and deactivating video tracks. It is also essential to show all tracks needing conforming. In case of a large session, conforming might also have to be done in multiple passes. Finally, he ensures that "Automation Follows Edit" is turned on as there is nothing worse than fixing all the cuts editorially to find out you have all the wrong automation! Dialogue supervisor Stephanie Brown MPSE discussed conforming the domestic version of a feature to the international version, in which new scenes have been added. Using inverted polarity, both versions are compared to make sure nothing has been missed. Stephanie discussed the three ways to flip polarity: using the AudioSuite plugin, using clip effects, or by using the Trim plugin. Either the old or new guide can be flipped and a separate bus called the "Flip Bus" is created and assigned. The selected track is then flipped and bounced (mono summed) and is imported. This highlights any areas where new material has been added. Especially with dialogue, this method helps identify any intricate changes that might have occurred, which one might miss while conforming manually or with Matchbox. Dialogue editor Eryne Prine walked us through the process of conforming assemblies and keeping them up to date. For the first pass, the old A1 tracks are conformed to the new A1 tracks in Matchbox using the AAF's from the picture department. The new guide should now match up to the conformed old guide track. The AAF made by Eryne is brought in, which has all the neatly labeled tracks to make sure all the pieces look the same, which ensures that the assembly doesn't have to be rebuilt from scratch.
