After making it to minimum security, Arthur meets Lee (Gaga), who wakes up the Joker inside of Arthur and the movie is off to the races. We coded most of the fantasy elements in what came to be known as "Murray Colors." While visiting my daughter Lucy in San Francisco during pre-production, I drove across the Bay Bridge as the sun was fighting through the fog to highlight Alcatraz Island. I texted a picture to Todd with a doodle suggesting that Arkham could also be on an island. Something between Alcatraz and Rikers. Working with VFX supervisor Ivan Moran, we resolved to create the island based on plates as much as possible. I was down for this approach, though I did bring members of Mufasa's Virtual Art Department to facilitate the plate-based terraforming of Arkham Island and the Gotham skyline. Using Unreal Engine, Julia Kodl, Sydnie Pontic and Yuri Bartoli figured out the way it all fit together. The models they made were helpful to the filmmakers in understanding the specific geography. It also gave the VFX team a huge head start. It was so useful that we decided to build all the sets virtually before we built them in wood and plaster. Todd, Larry and I made our notes virtually from inside the sets. Truthfully, I wore the goggles and they watched a monitor as I made a fool of myself bumping into furniture while attempting to be a tour guide. There's a beautiful messiness that comes from trying to collage disparate plates in order to make a single place. After contorting the design to be able to use existing assets, we settled on something resembling a design. Our Arkham combines plates of Alcatraz and the SF Bay city architecture with A.
