shared community and interwoven lives. From a single house, the crew built and built, sometimes without formal drawings, just piles of lumber, doors and windows layered onto a designed framework. The trestle footings created open bays, which became storefronts, true to both history and current times. This conveyed the cramped conditions, where every niche was used. We mirrored this with tight roads and alleys, allowing dramatic contrasts of light and shadow between the structures. Reconstructing Yoseb's House from season one was an exciting task. We built on the original footprint while adding new layers of life and history and cinematic flexibility. We used thick straw and mud walls, layered with plaster and glaze to give depth and texture. Cinematographer Ante Cheng shoots in a striking Kurosawa- esque style that emphasizes capturing intimate, naturalistic moments. Most of the scenes were shot with the actors seated on the floor. To accommodate this, I aimed to open up the set as much as possible while still retaining a cramped, authentic feeling by wilding the heavy walls. Doors and windows, frames within frames became a crucial part of the world-building; dressing what you see through them adds layers and complexity to the narrative, creating a visual depth that mirrors the story's richness. This approach allowed Ante to move the camera freely, using the available space to capture the sense of closeness while also giving the actors room to perform naturally.
