what I was trying to convey. Yet, communication was vital to our success, finding ways to articulate the vision despite all barriers. The key to our success was the people. Supervising Art Director Eric Jeon became my most important guide. Based in L.A. but originally from Korea, Eric came to Toronto for preproduction. When the Japan leg faced significant challenges, Eric stepped up, sorting through the vast amounts of photo research and organizing it alongside our two Japanese Art Directors. I even bought a magnifying glass for everyone in the Art Department to help us focus on the details that often get pixelated in digital zoom. Eric, like many of the crew, wanted to be part of telling this deeply personal and tragic story, one based on a history not well known to many Westerners. Once I landed in Korea for good, I spent every waking moment with him. For better or worse, Eric remembered every word I said. He created beautiful, detailed visual design decks for each build, reminding me of the core ideas I had from the beginning and keeping me on track with the big picture in mind, before everything became overwhelming with dense scripts, time zone shifts, double-up days and pure exhaustion.
