dressing debris. He also figured out how to get the 60-foot flatbed to lay with its underside up so we could see the wheels and still meet our director's blocking. The Train Derailment That Was Almost Derailed Initially, this train wreck sequence was supposed to be the season 4 finale, but when studio budget cuts made it impossible, our persistent Production Designer Denny Dugally pitched the idea of making it the season 5 opener to show runners Tim Minear and Rashad Raisani and they agreed. We were grateful that they honored the hard prep work we had all done enough to push for it to come back. Set Designers Kiel Gookin and Angela Cullen drew countless site plans and 3D models of locations that we lost. Assistant Art Director Camilla Pizarro patiently sent a heroic number of emails wrangling containers and train cars. Graphic Designer Joe Mason meticulously recreated train car graphics to bring the fabricated tankers and train cars to life. Art Department coordinator Michele Miatello- Lyons kept our sanity in countless ways and managed PAs Elijah Zavala and Gina Gutierrez in their endless missions to keep our walls filled with helpful research images and transport the oversized foam models to never-ending train meetings. The job of the Art Department is often to navigate contradictions—many of them glaring, between a wild concept and a humbling reality. To have taken such an ambitious concept like this train wreck and actually be proud of how it turned out, that's surely something worth writing home to the ADG about. But at the end of the day, what I am most proud of is not the grandeur of the sets or the quotes in People magazine, but all the people that tirelessly came together over the years to create seventy-two episodes of beautiful disasters. We may have not always gotten it perfect, but what became evident was that the finest technical work is done by humans treating each other humanely. ADG E.
