63 SAG-AFTRA SPECIAL ISSUE 2025 / sagaf tra.org SINCE 1962, THE SCREEN ACTORS GUILD has been honoring individuals embodying "outstanding achievement in fostering the finest ideals of the acting profession." Until 1995, the award was called the Screen Actors Guild Annual Award, intended to recognize — in the words of former SAG President George Chandler — the industry "greats" who have been of service to the union. The Annual Award then evolved into the Life Achievement Award for the inaugural Screen Actors Guild Awards, which was televised in 1995. During that ceremony, George Burns took home the coveted 18-inch statuette depicting the Grecian masks of comedy and tragedy — symbols that have represented the performing arts for centuries.
