M OT I O N P I CTU R E S O U N D E D I TO R S 99 husband, whose unwavering support and encouragement were crucial in helping me take this leap and follow my dream. It was at TAFE that it all truly clicked for me. Throughout my school years, academic success had often eluded me, however, when I stepped into the world of film and media studies, everything changed. I found myself excelling in all my classes, earning high distinctions, and being immersed in a world where my curiosity and passion were not only welcomed but celebrated. One year, we were tasked with organising a film festival and I eagerly volunteered to be in charge of the sound workshop. I began reaching out to professionals in the industry and a wonderful man named Andrew Plain (see MPSE Wavelength article, Winter 2024) responded to my request. At the end of the festival, I mustered the courage to ask Andrew if he knew anyone in the Foley industry who might be able to help me, and he connected me with Blair Slater, the owner of a Foley business called Longstocking Studios. Although Andrew has since passed away, his support and kindness have left a lasting impact on my life and career. I will always cherish the encouragement and warmth he showed me, and I am deeply thankful for the opportunity he gave me to pursue my dream. While my TAFE course had laid the groundwork, it was under Blair's guidance that my eyes were truly opened to the depth and nuance of Foley artistry. Blair was nothing short of amazing as a mentor. With his extensive experience in the industry, he brought a wealth of practical insights and real-world expertise that expanded my understanding of Foley in ways I hadn't anticipated. His approach to teaching was incredibly hands- on and immersive, allowing me to see the intricacies of Foley work up close. From mastering the subtleties of creating convincing sound effects to learning how to synchronize these sounds perfectly with visual elements, Blair's instruction was invaluable. I also learned a great deal by observing the work of seasoned professionals like Dan Johnston, a renowned Foley artist, and Duncan McAllister, a talented recordist. Watching Dan Johnston in action was amazing; his ability to craft detailed and believable soundscapes was inspiring. Similarly, Duncan McAllister's expertise in recording techniques and capturing the perfect sound was educational and eye-opening. But Blair continues to be a crucial source of learning and inspiration. His ongoing mentorship is a reminder of the endless possibilities for growth in this field.
