8 M PS E . O R G I hope everyone had a fantastic Fall. The MPSE enjoyed its busiest season ever with nonstop activity and events. We loved bringing these opportunities to our members and it is always a delight when we get to spend time together. You'll read about many of our events throughout this issue, including GameSoundCon, the American Film Convention, and multiple amazing screenings, but I wanted to make special note of our two biggest events, Sounding Board 4.0 and the MPSE Fall Family Picnic. FROM THE MPSE OFFICE Hello, wonderful members! Sounding Board 4.0 This year's Sounding Board 4.0 event was our biggest and best to date! We more than doubled our attendance from previous years, and more than tripled the panel offerings as well. Word is spreading about this informative sound-centric experience! The fabulous team at USC welcomed us with open arms into their School of Cinematic Arts to host. Special thanks go to the MPSE's own Midge Costin for her guidance and assistance in securing the venue. And the biggest thanks go to our partners in this event, CAS. We accomplish incredible things when we work together! The day started with a delicious breakfast buffet during which our attendees had time to socialize and prepare their schedules for the day. With everything we had planned, lots of coffee was a must! We were thrilled to have two dedicated theaters for our panels, and we had something happening in them all day long. For the first time, we implemented a Best Practices Pavilion, which featured a new mini-panel every hour, on the hour. We also increased our full panel discussions from two to three. The first full panel, Say What?, addressed an issue that artists in the sound community deal with frequently, dialogue intelligibility. Moderator Brian Slack was joined by MPSE member John Creed, and CAS members Devendra Cleary, Marc Fishman, and Ozzie Sutherland, as well as the VP of Advanced Media Systems for Dolby, Jeffrey Reidmiller, to discuss this important topic. The theater was standing room only! Next up was It's All Fun and Games, which gave us a deep dive into the world of sound for gaming. Moderator Eric Marks MPSE spoke with panelists and MPSE members Scott Gershin, Brad Beaumont, and Leilani Ramirez about what makes sound for gaming different from linear media and how to make your work support the dynamic and ever-changing landscapes in gaming. Our final big panel of the day was The Mad Hatters, which focused on the challenges and advantages of wearing multiple hats on a project. Moderator Joe Dzuban CAS was joined by panelists and MPSE members Kate Finan, Jamie Hardt, Tony Lamberti, and Jamey Scott as they detailed the pitfalls and benefits of doing it all. Halfway through the day, it was time to stop and recharge. A scrumptious and filling catered lunch was just what we needed. This gave our guests time to chat about the panels they'd attended while enjoying tri-tip in red wine sauce, pesto chicken, and mouthwatering vegetarian options such as ratatouille, roasted vegetables, garlic flatbread and salad. It was also a great time to enjoy our famous Parade of Carts and Bags. Production mixers and recordists brought in their rigs and gave our guests a one-on-one tour of their equipment.
