BY TIMOTHY MUIRHEAD MPSE n 2022, Sonic College, part of the University College of South Denmark, moved into a pair of brand-new, purpose built, buildings in Kolding, Denmark. Kolding is an extremely charming place with a downtown of cobblestone streets that has not changed much in the last century. But once you cross the bridge over the river in town, you see the modern triangular architecture of Sonic College and you immediately know something new and special has arrived. Sonic College is a dream location for those that want to create and manipulate sound in all its forms. The program features courses covering music recording and composition, game audio, and sound for film and series. From state-of-the-art studios and recording spaces, to a mix theatre that rivals the best the private sector has to offer, Sonic College is aiming to be a top international sound education destination. After moving into the new space, Lars Tirsbæk, a technical consultant at the college and the Head of Sonic Days, wanted to have an event to show the local community what they had come up with in their new space. This idea was the birth of the Sonic Days Conference. The first edition, in 2022, was modest. It worked as a proof of concept that there was a real appetite for a conference about sharing ideas and knowledge about making sound at the highest levels. In 2023, Sonic Days' second edition grew bigger, with more presentations and more attendees. The format was hitting its stride and the audience was having a great time. This trend continued into 2024, with the most recent edition being the biggest and busiest yet. This year, the Motion Picture Sound Editors joined the event by sponsoring the main theatre space, where all the marquee talks and presentations took place. This gave exposure for the MPSE to hundreds of sound students and professionals from all over Europe. Attendees at the 2024 edition included large delegations from Poland, Belgium, the UK, all over Scandinavia and I 34 M PS E . O R G L-R: MPSE members Shelley Roden (USA), Craig Henighan (USA), Timothy Muirhead (Toronto, ON), Peter Albrechtsen (Denmark), and Michal Fojcik (Poland).
