D A R K M A T T E R | P E R S P E C T I V E 6 5 It's not often that one gets a call to collaborate on a project which, at its core, is a concept that has been part of one's own philosophical contemplations: the path not taken. What if…I hadn't turned on that corner, as a young bicycle messenger in San Francisco? What if I had stayed in my native country of Argentina, instead of coming "for a few months," to the USA thirty- five years ago? The fact that every decision one makes can lead into a world that can be slightly, or completely, different to the world that could've been if they had…continued straight, instead of turning at that corner. That each decision may be the last thing one does is a notion that has been with me since my adolescence. A notion that can be paralyzing, but also sobering and even helpful. There is no decision more important than any other, since after all…any decision can be our last. Blake Crouch's extraordinary novel Dark Matter explores a world in which science has developed a portal that can take us into all the worlds that "could've been." The worlds where everything else that could've happened, is actually happening. Apple TV+'s Dark Matter, based on Crouch's novel, explores how one decision can change it all or, at least, all of what really matters. Dark Matter is science fiction. A story of people caught in a quantum universe (whether they walked into it or they were thrown into it), looking for something or someone. Dark Matter is Homer's Odyssey for the 21st century. A journey of love against all odds. A journey of resilience and tenacity. Most people who have worked in film and television discover that, sooner or later, resilience and tenacity are two indispensable attributes. For the Dark Matter team, those traits were the driving force for the project well before I joined it. That energy continued to propel us through a journey of creative exploration. The Box One of the many things I love about working in this industry, particularly in the Art Department, is the vast amounts of research we get to do. So many different subjects we get to delve into and get a glimpse, an idea of what these different subjects are about. In this case, it was something simple: quantum mechanics. A.
