Since 1992, the Directors Guild of America has hosted annual symposiums featuring its nominees for outstanding theatrical feature fi lm directing. In Directors Close Up, fi lm and television director Jeremy Kagan compiled the most insightful and entertaining responses from sessions conducted between 1992 and 2005, and then again in Directors Close Up 2 for those conducted between 2006 and 2012. In this all new sequel, Directors Close Up 3, Kagan shines his spotlight on nominees from the 2013–2020 seminars as directors discuss their work on some of the most brilliant fi lms in the last several years. From script development through pre-production to production and post- production, the directors offer personal insights into every step of the creative process and reveal their candid takes on the best and worst aspects of their profession. Featuring materials from their productions — including storyboards, script notes, sketches and on-set photos — Directors Close Up 3 will be of interest to both professional and aspiring directors, as well as fi lm fans who will enjoy this inside look into making movies. Associate Director Scott Berger discusses his roles within CBS, his work as a Senior Associate Director on the CBS Evening News and his inclination toward Guild service. Berger on duties he takes on as an Associate Director: "On a news show, you're responsible for the timing of each videoclip or tape at the time but also the overall show. You have to make sure that the information is translated to the Control Room AD and the Director. If you're in the tape area, you have to look at everything — not in a technical sense that you're making sure that the levels are right but just to your eye that everything sounds and looks proper. And you have to make sure that you know exactly how long each thing runs and what the outcue is and all of that information is translated up to the control room. But being the Control Room AD is for me the most fun. It's working right next to the Director, making sure that every bit of information that he or she needs to call the show is there. And you also have to make sure that the producing team behind you, that they're there and they're informed as well because things do change. On a live newscast you never know what's gonna happen. And often, news will break and whatever you've planned goes out the window and you're just kind of winging it." The DGA's Visual History Program website contains hundreds of hours of videotaped interviews with Directors and Director's team members discussing their careers and reflections on all aspects of the creative process in film, television and other media. These interviews are indexed for quick retrieval of segments pertaining to specific topics of interest within a particular interview or across the entire collection.
