Stage Manager Valdez Flagg discusses his career in variety and live events, his working philosophy and his extensive Guild involvement, including his time as the Western AD/SM/PA Council Chair. Flagg on his working philosophy as a Stage Manager: "When people ask me what I do, I say, 'I make sure all the elements of the stage are coming together so the Director gets his vision met for what people are seeing at home.' So, be that cameras, audio, set, props, Actors, Musicians, lighting, making sure the talent executives are in place so they know what's going on, we oversee it all. And when one person drops the ball, the thing about knowing your job is you know how to pick it up. For people that don't know their jobs, the ball gets dropped and things come to a standstill. But what I tell Producers who are now always squeezing our end of it is, 'Anyone can do the job. Someone that got in the Guild yesterday could do the job long as everything is going right. What you're paying me for is when things go wrong.' When things go wrong on a live show, you have seconds to make the right decision. They're paying you for experience that will save them in a short period of time on a live show." The DGA's Visual History Program website contains hundreds of hours of videotaped interviews with Directors and Director's team members discussing their careers and refl ections on all aspects of the creative process in fi lm, television and other media. These interviews are indexed for quick retrieval of segments pertaining to specifi c topics of interest within a particular interview or across the entire collection.
