T W I S T E R S | P E R S P E C T I V E 2 5 placed it near the middle of the intersection in order for to create the beat of the collapsing water tower. We used the exterior of the real El Reno movie theater. We loved the marquee and lobby, but the interior didn't really work. We were able to build that on stage which served the havoc and mayhem that was going to be filmed. We envisioned the ideal movie house of the Midwest, in the heartland of America, and what it would look like inside. I wanted to give a subtle nod to the Production Designer of the first film, Joseph Nemec. He had designed the deco style The Shadow only a few years prior to Twister, and he remains a huge inspiration to me. For the climax of the scene when the screen and the back wall of the building get ripped out, we had pre-destroyed the space behind the screen, so it was ready to go when revealed. We were inspired by the photo of a real tornado that had hit a theater and its screen and back wall got blown out, revealing the outside surroundings. Illustrator Victor Martinez was key to the El Reno sequence of beats…from the farmer's market to the crash of the trolley derailment, to the collapse of the water tower and the destruction of the inside of the movie theater. In the end, I think we all had a complete blast doing the film, we got to work with our friends every day with total support from everyone above us and made something we can feel proud of, confident that it is a worthy successor to a film that means so much to so many. It was never really work. Just a lot of creative fun in a beautiful part of the country. SEE YOU IN HAIL!
