face off that building, which became a key into the aesthetic of what our other houses had to be. The film's characters arrive upon this destruction and Javi's Storm PAR gang do their "vulture" thing as Tyler's team does their altruistic best to help the people who lost their homes by feeding them and helping search through debris. OM: After Crystal Springs, Kate goes to the Westway Motel in a town named Stillwater. Midwest City stood in for Stillwater in the film. Tyler catches up to her and they go across the street to a rodeo in progress. Those two sets worked together. It was pretty phenomenal when we did an overhead Google search and found an empty field across from a motel missing a corner building but with a big empty courtyard. PS: These two spaces laid out perfectly for the scene and gave the opportunity to build our own motel office and to fill in the missing back corner of the structure. The courtyard had the perfect space to put in a swimming pool and all the scripted elements would fall into place. It was a challenge to build a real swimming pool in our timeline but it had to be done because we needed strong anchor points for stunts and special effects, and a false wall for standpipes. The pool needed to be subterranean since we were going to drop a horse trailer in it. Outside vendors aren't usually accustomed to an urgent filming timeline, but Brian Benavides found a local contractor who was willing to accommodate us. The old Pawhuska rodeo grounds became the inspiration for the film's rodeo grandstand. We contracted with a traveling rodeo promoter to create the arena and the paddocks, and then, working with the set decoration team, created our own souvenir, concessions and ranch stands "alley." OM: We also knew it had to be destroyed, so it had to come apart quickly and we planned to use the parts and pieces from our motel build as wrecked dressing. Unfortunately, we had to stop filming halfway through the sequence because of the SAG strike. We completed only the work with the rodeo animals, then buttoned it all up and waited until PRODUCTION DESIGNER: Patrick Sullivan SUPERV. ART DIRECTOR: Oana B.
