Genetic Laboratory Concept Artist Gus Mendonca was responsible for designing the Renaissance's genetic laboratory, which would be featured in several key dramatic scenes. PD Naaman Marshall and director Fede Alvarez discussed the lab's role in the film and allowed Gus the creative freedom to enhance the tension with his set design. The proposed design for the lab included a hexagon-shaped room with multiple layers of workstations, aimed at playing a parallax game of hide and seek with various elements in the scenes. Additionally, it was important to ensure that the visual design of the hardware and architecture reflected the correct timeline, setting the environment between Sir Ridley Scott's Alien and James Cameron's Aliens. Conveyor Hallway Developed by Concept Artist Nick Stath, the conveyor belt/hive hallway is seen in the third act of the film. PD Naaman Marshall felt it was important for these spaces to draw inspiration from the look and feel of Aliens combined with a "back alley, industrial feel." With tensions rising in this particular scene, Nick proposed to design a tall, narrow hallway that would dramatically lean over the protagonists in order to create a feeling of weight and discomfort. To further emphasize a sense of fear, the height of the space was carefully crafted to ascend into darkness, portraying a sense of the unknown to the viewer, and that an alien could be hiding above. Creatures From the outset, Fede Alvarez was personally invested and passionate about bringing something fresh to the beasties in Romulus. Tempered by a reverence for the established lore and the holy design work done by H.R. Giger, Alvarez would speak very specifically about which elements we needed to honor and which ones were subject to exploration. Principally charged with creature design, Concept Artist Dane Hallett was trusted to "go nuts" within those parameters. Textures, colors and some shapes were all deeply considered and judged to form what we hope will be the nastiest incarnations of the monsters thus far. For the "Rook" android featured in the film, I sculpted varying levels of damage for Alvarez to select from. These ranged from acid burns to fully torn disfigured flesh. This served a useful starting point for Legacy Effects to construct the practical character rig. With Production Designer Naaman Marshall's guiding hand and the visionary direction of Fede Alvarez, Alien: Romulus promises not just a continuation, but a bold reimagining of the spine-chilling universe that has captivated fans for decades. "Creating the visual identity for Alien: Romulus was a fantastic experience," Marshall reflects. Each individual element of this film was crafted with reverence for the saga's legacy and a commitment to thrilling a new generation of audiences. ADG A. HIVE HALLWAY, ARTIST NICK STATH.
