and neglected marina to serve as the setting for The Boat. While one might expect such a locale to be readily available in the Dominican Republic, we ended up constructing our own to meet the specific requirements of the scene. In a small fishing village at the mouth of the Rio Soco was the ideal site for the script's makeshift marina. While there was no existing dock, the location provided easy river access and featured a dilapidated structure suitable for conversion into the dock master's residence. The area combined elements of a junkyard and a supply and repair store, setting the tone for the scene. The crew constructed a simple T-shaped wooden dock and aged it with a sandblasted finish to achieve a weathered look in sun-bleached gray and silver tones, complete with detailed cracking, splitting and erosion. Wendy designed several captivating signs, and Cindy expertly added layers of thematic junk to enhance the set's authenticity. Then, of course, there was The Boat. Was it a houseboat? In script analysis, there's often a tension between the written description and what would be visually or narratively compelling. Doug and I discussed this at length and decided on an old fishing trawler, evoking the essence of the orca from Jaws. The boat needed to match the worn-in character of the marina, appearing as if it were nearing the end of its service life. With assistance from marine coordinator Bo Sanchez, we found an old trawler that, with some paint and set dressing, perfectly fit the scene. Although the production had found and created what seemingly looked perfect for the world of The Boat, its suitability was only superficial. We encountered a major issue with the contaminated water at the location, which made it unsafe for a scene involving a crocodile attacking a 'bad guy' character. To resolve this, we utilized visual effects and the nearby pinewood tank. This allowed us to D. MARINA SIGN. GRAPHIC LAYOUT. E. GLASS KEY MARINA. SET PHOTO. F. ROAD HOUSE AERIAL VIEWS. ILLUSTRATION.
