To understand what the building looked like on the outside, the Art Department leaned on our interior location, which was in the heart of Santo Domingo at a derelict steel manufacturing plant slated for demolition. In fact, to bring a certain amount of realism to the interior/exterior connection, we were allowed to salvage and reuse material on-site that was otherwise slated for the dump. Everything from interior catwalks and railings to exterior paneling and louvered windows. We essentially had a sandbox full parts and pieces that we could then collage together into the vision of the fight club. Using SketchUp, I designed a layered environment using these parts to surround the fight ring like a makeshift stadium for viewing, betting and drinking. The intention was to have a loud and rowdy crowd packed shoulder to shoulder. This was an inherently dirty environment that had a patina to match. I then worked with Illustrator Jamie Rama to develop a couple of rendered views that would exact the mood and look of the environment. We discussed palette and I gave him references for color and lighting. Once the look was set, the Art Department developed working drawings and Art Director Lorelei Sainz led A. FIGHT CLUB EXTERIOR.
