So began the weeks of scouting for our house. By my count, Eric and I physically visited some forty options. Happily, every one of those reject houses offered details for ground plans, moldings, door details, decor or basement looks that would prove useful in creating our own Jackson house later. Lee was first attracted to a block of rundown row houses that reminded him of the neighborhoods in West Philly where his roots are. We needed to know just how poor this family was meant to be, and as the weeks went on, that answer slid slowly up the economic scale. Lee ultimately decided the exterior should be squarely middle class, and by April 29, we were all onboard with that very first brick house and its three creepy arches. At last, the interior floors could be designed! (A great relief to construction coordinator Buster Pile, chomping at the bit to begin.) By May 1, I'd handed a rough plan of the first and second floors to our extraordinary Art Director, Carlton Lee Jr., who built a complete digital model of the two floors while simultaneously supervising the drafting of the sets by Set Designers Kate Bechak and Wright McFarland. Two days later, I finished my first ink and marker sketches on onionskin of the first-floor interiors. With my sketches and Carlton's computer model, Lee and Eli could bless our design and construction could now go great guns in order to meet a July 1 deadline when we'd open the set.
