R I P L E Y | P E R S P E C T I V E 9 I began the process in October of 2019 with my wife, Supervising Art Director Karen Schulz Gropman, breaking down the scripts, roughly designing the studio sets to analyze stage space needs, scouting NY locations and rough budgeting. I then traveled to Italy in November 2019 for my initial scouting, finding the grey stormy skies and charged air Steve was looking for. Shutting down March 11, 2020, we returned January 3, 2021, now finding the truly sparsely populated Italy Steve had envisioned, and resumed our scouting. The series had plus-or-minus two hundred practical locations. These included creating two interior train stations—Roma Termini and Napoli Centrale, four train platforms, two ferry docks, four banks, two American Express offices and two post offices. Tom checks in and out of a total of seven hotels and pensione, and one spectacular palazzo in Venice. Just one hotel like the Excelsior was created by a combination of three different locations—none of them the actual Excelsior. When you add all the work done in Rome, Naples, Capri, Atrani, Anzio, Palermo, Venice and New York, it's easy getting to two hundred. B. LEONARD FREED. NAPLES, ITALY, 1956. C. PIETRO DONZELLI.
