Lewis on how he sees the role of Assistant Director: "It's interesting because the Crew really looks for the ADs for answers, particularly the 1st AD. You're running the set, we're telling them whether we're going to go into gold and invade turnaround, or make changes and so forth. And so, the Crew really sees Assistant Directors — and obviously the Production Manager — being part of management. And management would expect us to do what benefi ts them, but would also see us having a working relationship with the Crew. And of course, when it comes to negotiation, we're not management, we're a Guild. And so, I've always had this philosophy that there's that expression, 'Are you below the line or above the line?' And I would always say, 'Neither, I'm an Assistant Director. I am the line.' And I think that's exactly what we do. We are the bridge between the below the line to the above the line." The DGA's Visual History Program website contains hundreds of hours of videotaped interviews with Directors and Director's team members discussing their careers and reflections on all aspects of the creative process in film, television and other media. These interviews are indexed for quick retrieval of segments pertaining to specific topics of interest within a particular interview or across the entire collection.
