B M & T ••• September/October 2024 ••• www.blackmeetingsandtourism.com 37 N estled on the west coast of Florida, Tampa has long been celebrated for its vibrant culture, scenic water- front, and dynamic business environment. This year, it played host to the Destinations International (DI) Conference for Tourism, drawing professionals from around the globe to dis- cuss the future of the tourism industry. My visit to Tampa for this conference provided a comprehen- sive view of the city's offerings, from top-notch accommoda- tions to state-of-the-art meeting facilities, and high lighted its readiness to welcome group events and conferences of all sizes and industries. The Destinations International Conference held at the JW Marriott in Tampa Bay, made a momentous impact by expand- ing Destinations International's resources and presenting the organization's pivotal role in the tourism industry. Featuring a diverse lineup of insightful discussions, technical workshops, and keynote speeches, the event offered a comprehensive approach to addressing tourism's challenges and opportunities. The conference's forward-thinking focus on building inclusive relationships aimed to equip destination marketing organizations (DMOs) with essential tools and knowledge, supporting a more welcoming and accessible environment for all travelers. Their emphasis on inclusivity promises to enhance both the travel experience, efficient cross-communication amongst cities, and a broader community impact of destinations. Tampa Bay, made a prideful boast of showcasing its boldly renovated infrastructures, welcoming atmosphere, delicious culinary hot spots, inclusive of its progressive path toward for- ward-thinking initiatives. The DesTinaTion: Tampa's aTTracTion A city that beautifully blends historic charm with modern amenities, Tampa is located on Florida's Gulf Coast. Boasting glamorous waterfront buildings, rich cultural heritage, and a dynamic culinary scene, Tampa is a destination that has a goal to cater to a diverse multitude of visitors. The city's historic Ybor City district, vibrant downtown, culinary offerings, and scenic Riverwalk are just a few of the highlights that make it a comfort- able and entertaining location for both tourists and business travelers. Tampa Bay is a treasure trove of diverse experiences. I start- ed at the JC Newman Cigar Factory, one of the last cigar mak- ers in the U.S., marveling at the meticulous craft behind Tampa's famous cigars. In historic Ybor City, the lively streets showcase the area's vibrant Cuban heritage. The Tampa Streetcar easily connects to key spots like the Columbia Restaurant, where the Cuban sandwich was first created, and Bern's Steakhouse, renowned for its exceptional steaks, unique dessert menu, and aged wines—though a reservation a month in advance is essen- tial. For alternative dining, Haven offers a great option, while Oxford Exchange provides stylish shopping and a renowned breakfast experience. Close by, luxury island hotels and the bustling Convention Center round out a memorable Tampa Bay adventure. The conference: embracing DiversiTy Conference speaker and president/CEO of Visit Tampa Bay, Santiago Corrada's message was a powerful call to action. By framing diversity as a necessity rather than a trend, he under- scored the critical shift needed in the tourism industry. His emphasis on creating spaces where everyone feels welcomed and valued resonates deeply in today's context, where true inclusivity is more important than ever. His words not only set a meaningful tone for the conference but also likely motivated attendees to reflect on and enhance their own approaches to embrace inclusivity.
