52 • LMGI COMPASS | Summer 2024 OUTSTANDING LOCATIONS IN A PERIOD FILM DUNE: PART TWO The harsh environment of Arrakis steers the action in the mesmerizing sci-fi sequel, as bold new venues bring the danger and romance of the arid planet to life. Wadi Rum's majestic rock formations house the hidden Fremen cities, while camera-virgin regions of Jordan's eastern desert and the deep sand dunes at Abu Dhabi's Liwa Oasis visualize the unforgiving environment that is both wilderness and refuge to the protagonist. Namibia's dramatic desert coast sets the scene for a sand-meets-sea vision, while the modernist world of the Imperium materialized onscreen at the Brion Tomb in Altivole, Italy, and in Budapest at the Varga Márton Japanese Garden and the Labor Movement Mausoleum. FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA New South Wales reflects the quintessential Mad Max hellscape in a new expanded wasteland, with the origin story of the fierce desert neo-warrior Furiosa. In addition to the original Mad Max 2 filming site Belmont Station, the sand dunes of Kurnell, and the red dirt flats and miles-wide views of Hay were ideal for driving and stunt sequences and created natural and organic dust storms to bring the story to life. Locations reflect the story's post-apocalyptic rawness with an inventive mashup of cobbled-together industrial elements: An unfinished construction site is stitched together with a Sydney chemical factory to create Gas Town, while Bullet Farm blends a real working gold mine near Broken Hill with an operational sand mine in Sydney. KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON Oklahoma's rolling plains and blistered ranches become a silent witness to injustice when sacred tribal grounds become the focus of a string of murders within the oil-wealthy Osage Nation in the 1920s. The region's antique towns and open prairie spaces evoke a sense of freedom and isolation from justice, while private ranches and sacred Osage sites infuse a deep sense of history and realism to the story. Tulsa becomes a symbol of government apathy where the crimes' aftermath unfolds among the city's formal art deco federal buildings. Killers of the Flower Moon Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Dune: Part 2
