LMGI COMPASS | Summer 2024 • 45 SLOW HORSES Season 3 When a romantic liaison in Istanbul threatens to expose deeply buried M15 secrets, a team of discredited agents confined to purgatory in Slough House are once again called upon to save the day. Filmed mainly in London, Slough House exteriors are filmed at the very building on Aldersgate Street that inspired the unglamourous location in the books. The slovenly head of the crew of misfits and an M15 superior meet regularly on a bench by the Regent's Canal to exchange secrets and insults. Moody establishing shots reveal the many faces of London as clandestine meetings, a kidnapping and high-octane action in a massive storage facility describe the trajectory of an exhilarating rush through London told with a cheeky sarcasm that tempers the high-stakes espionage game being played. THE GENTLEMEN A former army captain inherits the family estate and returns home to claim his dukedom, only to discover a hidden cannabis empire thriving beneath its dairy. Locations in London and its environs highlight the opulence and grandeur of the Duke's privileged life and the criminal underworld he must learn to navigate. From the aristocratic lived-in elegance of Badminton House playing for the family's Halstead Manor, and the posh Reform Club as a private gentleman's club where shady deals are made, to the gritty realism of Billingsgate Fish Market, and the vicious boxing matches held at the N. Greenwich's Magazine Building, the stark differences between the Duke's refined world and the raw, dangerous realm of his gangster adversaries drive the narrative brutally forward— but not without a touch of class. SUGAR A genre-bending, highly stylized noir mystery plays out beneath a blinding California sun, imbuing familiar Los Angeles locales with a disorienting dreamlike quality that belies the heinous crimes that private eye John Sugar will uncover. As he struggles with demons of his own, he is hired to find the missing granddaughter of a renowned Hollywood producer, whose wealth and power is expressed by his sprawling estate. An elegant boutique hotel where Sugar resides is played by a sophisticated Spanish revival residence that shows his own fondness for a chic Hollywood experience informed by classic films. The villain resides in an old house situated in an oil field, the motion of the pumps adding to the tension of the inevitable brutal confrontation to come. Seedy bars, rundown apartments and gritty streets show a world far from the glamour, and a trip to the desert east of Los Angeles brings a revelation that propels the story into entirely new territory.
