LMGI COMPASS | Summer 2024 • 43 AND THE NOMINEES ARE… Each year, we eagerly anticipate the projects that will be submitted for the LMGI Awards. Even in this year of work stoppage, and what is hopefully the last round of delays caused by the pandemic, there was an amazing number of great TV series, films, commercials and film commissions brought to our attention. Award committee members, comprised of LMGI members from the US, Canada, the UK, France and Spain, watched it all, considering each entry with a deep appreciation for the quality of location work that you have helped usher onto the screen. Whether set in our complex present, the elegance or brutality of past eras, or in a grim dystopian future, where these tales are spun and how the characters inhabit the worlds we help build is, to us, a source of endless fascination. It is what animates our curiosity and inspires our craft. Why this house, that city, this frozen tundra, that breathtaking landscape? These choices tell where story lives. They are the lifeblood of character and the impetus for action. Locations in a commercial help telegraph a product or promotional message instantaneously, telling the most story in the shortest amount of time. The nominees for Outstanding Film Commission all opened doors that made access to incredible locations possible. The world is indeed our back lot. These nominee finalists, as were all the projects submitted, filmed on location around the globe. Regions across the US, South America, Canada, the UK, France, Italy, Spain, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Africa, the Middle East, Iceland and Japan are all represented. Some projects strove for authenticity, filming where events actually unfolded—outside the gates of a concentration camp in Poland or in the actual home of an acclaimed composer. We can also wave the wand of movie magic to make castles in the UK play for those in France, the mountains, forests and towns of British Columbia describe locales all across the US or have Florida's blinding sun rise in Los Angeles. The tricks of our trade are as old as the earliest cinema, our sleight of hand transporting viewers to where the story needs to be. This suspension of belief allows us to enter the story without reservation, eager to see where it will take us. This is our superpower, and the why of the LMGI Awards. We urge you all to continue to submit projects for our consideration. Whether you make it onto the first ballot as a nominee or not or become a finalist in the second round of voting, you are putting a spotlight on your project, attracting new viewers and giving the committee a reason to watch a film or TV series that might not have been on our radar. The top five or six vote-getters in the first round of nominee voting are now the nominee finalists in each award category. The winners are determined in the second round of voting and will be announced at the 11th Annual LMGI Awards gala on August 24, 2024, in Beverly Hills. We hope to see you there—or following the ceremony on the livestream on YouTube! Congratulations to all!
