The City's Film Office is now accepting permit applications. weho.org/film Film Coordinator Eddie Robinson (323) 848-6489 In April, Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) students were treated to a one-day "Location Scout Masterclass," led by Atlanta- based LMGI Education Committee members and Board members Ryan Schaetzle and Mac Gordon. Hosted by the School of Film & Acting and the Career and Alumni Success departments, the three-part six-hour program covered the highlights of location managing with a focus on scouting. Held at the SCAD film studios, Film and Television Chair DW Moffett introduced Gordon and Schaetzle to the class of aspiring producers and directors. The seasoned location professionals stressed the importance of understanding how their role contributes not only to the overall logistical planning of motion picture or television production, but also aesthetically by researching and presenting locations to the creative team that help tell the story. "The students were really engaged," says Gordon. "Their questions were impressive and thoughtful and could easily inspire topics for even more lectures and discussion." After lunch, they headed out to SCAD's new and ever- growing back lot and XR stage, prompting more discussion about what production considers when deciding to film on a backlot vs. an actual location. The day ended with a trip to a picturesque street corner in downtown Savannah. Gordon described a theoretical scene at the location, and had the students think about how they might approach filming it using their newfound knowledge on the art and craft of location scouting and management . Said Schaetzle, "It was a great experience for Mac and I, and hopefully, we gave the students an insight to our role that will be remembered when they, the next generation, start producing their own projects. Future plans to replicate the experience have been discussed and hopefully, it's the beginning of a great relationship between the SCAD Film School and the LMGI."
