M OT I O N P I CTU R E S O U N D E D I TO R S 57 EM: How many pages are we talking about? Like if you received a script today, and you were recording tomorrow? KZS: I did get the first Metal Gear ahead of time. Back then, games were incredibly thick stacks of paper. I got this box from them, I think it was on a Friday—it's sitting there and I thought, "Okay, well, that's obviously for all the actors." There was different colored paper throughout the box, so I thought those were the actor divisions. I thought, "I'll just read this over the weekend. I'll just read it on Saturday afternoon, Sunday, whatever." I think I waited until Sunday. I opened the box, 'cause I think I'm only gonna have to look at some small portion of it. But it was all one script. Metal Gear's first script was this big [gestures a giant, tall stack of papers]. EM: Oh my god. KZS: This many pages. Yeah. EM: Like phone books worth of… KZS: Plural phone books. Yeah, it was a good foot of paper. EM: And you had to read that in a weekend? KZS: I skimmed it so fast it wasn't even funny. Laughs. Well, a lot of that also included the in-game lines, and those you don't really have to know quite as well. EM: Is it usually scene direction plus dialogue in a game script? KZS: On the cinematics, yes. Sometimes there's more specific direction for in-game stuff, or description of what the situation is. Like if they're in the jungle and they're sneaking around.
