the chagrin of my then-neighbors) when Jerry Lee Lewis' motorcade is escorted through London by several Triumph bikes in Great Balls of Fire! and my throaty ski boat served as a powerboat in another film. If we needed speed bumps, highway lane dots, wind whistling through the sunroof or any other generic auto sound, my car would get miked up. Oh, and although I didn't record it, that's also me driving my Austin Healey for the sound of the one that Steve Martin drives in Father of the Bride. Having a garage full of tools also helped in the design process and pretty much any electric motor, air compressor, electromagnet, ratchet, torch, hose, etc., was used when needed for a specific sound or element. With the upgrade in multi-channel theater sound that Dolby helped bring about, it was the perfect time to incorporate digital tools into sound design, and the transition from music was a perfect fit. It was fun to work with the editors and collaborate on new fresh sounds. With my background from Mag City, I was quite familiar with their tools of the trade and was happy to show them what kinds of things I could make for them. At Paramount, I was fortunate enough to meet a couple of older editors working nights "rewriting" MacGyver episodes with hundreds of ADR lines. They had broken in right at the end of optical and recounted how it was an adjustment when they could no longer "see" the sound when they edited. I remember talking to them and thinking, this is amazing, right? I mean, I'm here, I'm this digital kid, and these guys go all the way back to optical which, of course, was the last time there was a visual John with Laurent Kossayan recording the Spacex Falcon Heavy launch 7/27/23 Fly Me to the Moon.
