M OT I O N P I CTU R E S O U N D E D I TO R S 47 n early 1998, video game narratives consisted of walls of text and emotionless characters blankly moving toward objectives. There was a sizable gap between the connection we had with our favorite film characters compared to those onscreen in a game. One singular game altered the entire trajectory of game storytelling, and showed that through strong characters and deep relationships we could experience emotional resonance. Metal Gear Solid was a game changer in virtually every way. One standout reason for this was the breathtaking voice performances from all the actors—they were striking when compared to other games at the time. We were suddenly immersed in a fully fleshed out story with powerful, well-rounded characters and believable relationships. The final result helped inspire the entire industry to shape the future of what storytelling in games could be. Legendary voice director Kris Zimmerman Salter directed the English dialogue in Metal Gear Solid and was also responsible for casting the characters we came to know and love. But Kris' illustrious career didn't start or end there. She is still doing what she loves today, bringing game characters to life on a much grander scale than all those years ago. I had the rare opportunity to sit down with Kris and learn all about her career in both games and animation. In the words of one of the countless iconic characters she helped bring to life, "Kept you waiting, huh?" I I Voice and casting director Kris Zimmerman Salter. Photo by Eric Marks.
